(b) How far away will the projectile land from where it was launched?

Homework - 9/21/10

A bear is at a local park, drowning his sorrows the way he knows best - by drinking a mug of honey. Sad that his bear family has deserted him and that his bloodlust for humans has made him a fugitive, he slides the mug down the table in frustration. The mug slides off the table horizontally and strikes the ground 1.40 meters from the base of the table. If the tabletop is 0.86 meters high, what velocity did the mug have when it left the table?

The man trying to set the new world record for fastest falling human is planning to jump from rest and reach a speed of 770 mi/hr.

(a) Determine how much time it will take to reach that speed.

(b) Determine how far he will fall to reach that speed.

(c) If the first man to perform the jump jumped from 100,000 feet and the new guy is going to jump from 120,000 feet, do you think he will set the record? (Use your answer from b to help justify your answer. Also, 1 meter = 3.3 feet)

Homework - 9/2/10


A wealthy businessman has been reduced to taking the bus to work. The bus driver, assuming that a businessman certainly wouldn't be waiting for a bus, passes up the bus stop, continuing with a constant velocity of 20 m/s. The businessman starts running from rest, but can only accelerate at 1.5 m/s2. How much time will it take the man to catch the bus? Also, how far did he have to run?


Remember: For full credit, your solution should fill the entire page and should include (1) a diagram, (2) words, and (3) math. In your explanation, you should explain how you knew which equation to use and how you solved for the final answer. You should also state whether your answer is reasonable. For example, would a human really be able to cover that distance in that amount of time.

A sailboat is being constantly accelerated at 3 m/s2. The wind continues to accelerate the boat, causing it to travel 517 meters in 15 seconds. What was the velocity of the boat before the wind started pushing it?

For example, a speed of 1,000m/s is not a reasonable speed for a sailboat because they're usually much slower.
